Since no combination of other supply technologies is likely to fully replace nuclear’s carbon abatement potential, success in overcoming technical, social and political barriers is vital. One reason for the difficulties in gaining the necessary public acceptance all over the world for nuclear power plants is the management of long-lived radioactive waste, such as spent nuclear fuel and the wastes arising from the reprocessing of spent fuel.
The nuclear program in Brazil indicates that by the end of 2030 at least four more nuclear power plants are to be generating electricity. Besides Angra 3 pressurized water reactor, whose construction gets completed in 2014, at least three more advanced nuclear reactors are to be built in Brazil according to the national government projection. The XVI Meeting on Nuclear Reactor Physics and Thermal Hydraulics (XVI ENFIR) will provide an international forum to present and discuss recent research and development in the issues related to a nuclear renaissance born of environmental urgency. Papers are solicited in all areas of analyses of nuclear systems as well as from related disciplines including the following subject categories:
